Once styles have been created with technical sheets and bill of material, orders are added to the planning wizard, usually segmented by department or season.
Time-related and resource-oriented planning implies to visualize data in the form of charts, which allows to keep data in check in a comfortable way and to intervene if required. Argentis decided for the VARCHART XGantt .NET component to graphically visualize the production planning processes of its solution for SAP® Business One.
A Gantt chart visualizes the machine utilization, the progress of orders, the availability of employees and much more to plan, control and optimize the production. Gantt charts let the planner react interactively and quickly to deviations from the initial plan. Thus resources are utilized to full capacity and processes are speeded up.
When it comes to detailed planning, order times, lead times, transition periods, capacity allocations, and availability of resources are critical parameters in the value creation process.
By using a Gantt chart that is realized with VARCHART XGantt .NET to graphically visualize and compare all tasks with the required resources, Argentis Consulting achieves a high level of transparency so that the user can easily grasp where and how intervention is required.
The Gantt chart view can be opened by clicking the corresponding option in the Manufacturing Order sheet that is based on the planning wizard’s data
The below screenshots show a highly descriptive and flexible chart, allowing the planner to schedule interactively by drag and drop, thus letting him simulate different planning strategies. Delivery dates and customer information can be easily drilled down.
The Gantt chart comes with two views, the Order View and the Resource View so that the order data can be assessed from different perspectives thus providing a better basis for decision-making.
In garment manufacturing, the term SAM (Standard Allowance Minute) - widely used by industrial engineers and production people in the garment manufacturing industry -plays an important role for the estimation of cost of making a garment. It denotes the time requirement to manufacture a garment and it could be segmented by operations (cuttting, sewing, packing, QA, etc.).
As the SAM value is crucial for the manufacturing process, the planner should keep a close eye on it. The Order View is the ideal tool for this as it not only lists the the production orders categorized by their status in the table area but in the diagram area displays a summary bar for the total manufacturing time needed for the according order. A yellow triangle indicates the customer delivery date which is a vital item in garment manufacturing as well. If the date is not kept, the customer will run late for the season.
By clicking on + the order can be expanded so that its related tasks will be revealed, sorted in ascending numerical order, the corresponding bars clearly illustrating the needed time for the single tasks.
Pointing the mouse cursor to a bar in the Gantt area will display a tooltip with a product photo and the task details.
The tasks can be moved horizontally by drag & drop to either bring them forward in time or to postpone them.
Bright blue bars indicate orders that have been assigned to an external shop.
The Resource view gives a clear overview of the resources and their workloads i.e. the departments with their corresponding machines/employees (internal or external) performing manufacturing operations (if expanded).
In the Resource view orders can be re-allocated while keeping the order delivery date.
Histograms offer support for the planner’s decisions by instantly indicating capacity bottlenecks: A histogram below the Gantt chart displays the workload of the corresponding resource: The sections highlighted in red indicate a capacity problem that ought to be solved by rescheduling.
If the Activities Dependency option is ticked, links between the tasks are displayed as well. Links can be created, modified or deleted interactively in the Gantt chart. Clear-cut and unambigous links between tasks help to recognize dependencies. Different link types between the layers/bars allow to highlight them.
