Production and project scheduling for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Netronic, part of Boyum IT Solutions, offers three visual scheduling solutions that add interactive Gantt charts to Business Central. The Visual Production Scheduler (VPS), the Visual Advanced Production Scheduler (VAPS) and the Visual Jobs Scheduler (VJS) each serve a different planning need, from visual production scheduling to finite capacity scheduling and project and resource planning.

Flexible solutions

Use visual drag & drop and Schedule Successors to adjust the production schedule while keeping the planner in control of scheduling decisions.

Which Netronic scheduling solution fits how your business plans

The right choice depends on whether the business schedules production orders or projects, and on how much scheduling support planners need beyond standard Business Central.

Choose VPS for visual production scheduling

VPS suits manufacturers that want a visual, drag & drop view of production orders and capacity that stays close to standard Business Central scheduling logic. Many manufacturers use it as their first step toward digital production scheduling.

Choose VAPS for finite capacity scheduling

VAPS suits manufacturers whose schedules are hard to keep because of capacity constraints, changing priorities or material shortages. Operations are scheduled against the capacity actually available, with material availability and alternative machine centers taken into account.

Choose VJS for project
and resource scheduling

VJS suits organizations whose work is organized in projects and whose planners coordinate shared resources across several of them. It adds the task dependencies that standard Business Central does not offer.

Businesses that run both production and project-based work in Business Central can combine VJS with VPS or VAPS.

Scheduling logic

Stays close to standard Business Central logic, without adding scheduling logic of its own.

Moves from standard Business Central scheduling to forward scheduling in finite capacity, and can take predefined alternative machine centers into account.

Builds on standard Business Central project planning and adds link dependencies between tasks and the option to assign tasks to resource groups. Assignments are made visually, from task to resource or resource to task.

When plans change

Planners drag & drop an operation and use Schedule Successors to reschedule subsequent operations.

When planners drag & drop an operation, the following operations reschedule automatically. VAPS schedules all operations as early as possible while respecting capacity constraints and material availability, which helps create an actionable production plan.

When planners move a task, linked successor tasks reschedule automatically.

Managing
capacity

Capacity load charts and visual alerts for overloads

Histograms show capacity load, and finite capacity prevents overloads. Fill Idle Times, Tighten Queue and a Standby resource help planners optimize the plan.

Planners schedule by resource group first and assign individual resources later.

Stand-out
feature

Viewer Mode: a view-only, automatically updating schedule for people who need visibility without scheduling controls

Schedule simulations let planners compare scenarios by KPIs without changing the live schedule. The Sales Order view shows when delivery dates are at risk, so the sales team can be informed early.

Task dependencies: when one project task moves, its successors reschedule automatically. Standard Business Central does not offer this.

Questions it answers

"Will this order meet its due date?"
"Where could bottlenecks occur?"

"What can we realistically deliver, and when?"
"What happens if we add this order?"
Each color mode in the Capacity view answers further questions.

"Who is available?"
"How does moving this task affect the rest of the project?"

Frequently asked questions about scheduling in Business Central

Answers to common questions about VPS, VAPS, VJS and what standard Business Central covers on its own.

What do the Netronic scheduling solutions have in common?

All three add a visual, interactive scheduling environment with Gantt charts to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. They bring Business Central data together in graphical views, highlight issues with visual alerts, and let planners adjust the schedule with drag & drop. They differ in which Business Central data they work with and how much scheduling support they add: VPS and VAPS focus on production, and VJS focuses on projects and resources.

Which Netronic solution should a business choose?

VPS suits manufacturers that want visual production scheduling close to standard Business Central logic. VAPS suits manufacturers that need finite capacity scheduling with material availability and alternative machine centers. VJS suits project-driven organizations that plan shared resources across several projects. Businesses that run both production and projects can combine VJS with VPS or VAPS.

What is the difference between VPS and VAPS?

VPS makes standard Business Central production scheduling visual and interactive without adding scheduling logic of its own. VAPS adds forward scheduling in finite capacity, so operations are scheduled against the capacity actually available while material availability, alternative machine centers and priorities are taken into account. VAPS also offers schedule simulations and a Sales Order view that shows when delivery dates are at risk.

Does Business Central have a Gantt chart for scheduling?

Standard Business Central does not include an interactive Gantt chart for production or project scheduling. VPS and VAPS add Gantt-based views for production orders and capacity, and VJS adds a project Gantt chart and a resource Gantt chart. Planners work in these views directly inside Business Central.

Does Business Central support finite capacity scheduling?

Standard Business Central does not include finite capacity scheduling, and it does not show material availability at production order level. VAPS adds both: it schedules operations as early as possible while respecting capacity constraints and the earliest material availability date. Business Central's MRP and Planning Worksheet continue to support mid-term demand planning.

This also has an important security benefit: scheduling data does not need to be copied into an external system, keeping it within the Microsoft ecosystem and aligned with Microsoft’s security standards. With VPS, visual scheduling remains connected to Business Central manufacturing information rather than becoming a disconnected process.

Does Business Central support dependencies between project tasks?

Standard Business Central does not offer dependencies between project tasks. VJS adds link dependencies, so when one task moves, its linked successor tasks reschedule automatically. VJS also lets planners assign tasks to a resource group first and to individual resources later.

Do all Netronic solutions work with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central?

Yes. VPS, VAPS and VJS are all built for Business Central, work directly with Business Central data, and are available on Microsoft AppSource. VPS and VJS are also available in versions for Microsoft Dynamics NAV, while VAPS is available for Business Central only.

Does scheduling data leave Business Central?

No. VPS, VAPS and VJS are extensions that run inside Business Central and work directly with its database, so no separate scheduling database is required. With VAPS, the scheduling logic itself also runs within Business Central.

Do the Netronic solutions replace standard Business Central functionality?

No. All three build on the planning foundation already in Business Central and work with the data businesses already maintain there. VPS stays close to standard Business Central manufacturing and scheduling logic. VAPS adds detailed finite capacity scheduling alongside the MRP and Planning Worksheet. VJS adds dependencies between project tasks alongside graphical project and resource views.

Can a business use more than one Netronic solution?

Yes. VJS complements VPS and VAPS for businesses that run both production and project-based work in Business Central. VJS manages projects and resources while VPS or VAPS handles the production schedule.

How can a business get started?

VPS, VAPS and VJS are available on Microsoft AppSource. The most reliable way to find the right fit is a demo, in which the Netronic team looks at how the business plans today and shows how VPS, VAPS or VJS would work with its Business Central data.
